I can't be the only one to notice the tsunami of possible bot accounts with the username variation on imdbfan-(random ten-digit number set). At face value, these accounts are voting for different options on polls and randomly rating different IP (movies, etc...). So? Not the usual red flag activity where bot accounts ratings bombings a particular movie or tv series. But still, something one should monitor or even prevent from happening - considering they aren't actual human owned accounts. Of course, there's the nano-sized chance that this is some kind of coordinated flashmob/long haul prank. Either way? This should be monitored and discouraged (if not outright banned for the possibility of the havoc that could be inflicted on IMDb's reputation). Hey, guys I saw many votings in my new poll and also saw that there were several users called imdbfan - xxxxxxxxxx (xxxxxxxxxx seem to be randomly 10-digit numbers) I suspect someone to manipulate the votings. What do you think about? I'm not sure if the voting in the poll section fit. Seems like there is a guy with several accounts voting. There are several user with similar names: imdbfan - xxxxxxxxxx ("imdbfan - " followed by 10 digits, each number different from the other) The number of votes seem unusual high. Thanks for the problem reports. The accounts which @Jessica reported look like AI powered clones with the same profile text just reworded for different generes.  Please await the IMDb CS team to comment on this separately and to possibly start an investigation.

However, a little bit of background on @Breumaster's point around the imdbfan-XXXXXXXXXX accounts; these are not necessarily bot accounts.  Earlier this year we had to make a temporary change to how we pick the default account nickname for new IMDb accounts, and using the "imdbfan-" format was active for a few weeks.  While many people who registered during this time have subsequently manually changed their nicknames, some people are unware that their generic account name is visible on the site and have not changed it to something more personal.

But they wouldn’t all suddenly “wake up” and start voting in polls, right!? From my perspective, something programmed must be behind this, because there are all sorts of numbers appearing after the “imdbfan-” prefix, and it’s happening gradually. The votes didn’t appear all at once, zack zack zack, but rather slowly over time, almost as if someone is trying to conceal poll stuffing. Can you not trace whether these users were all accessing the site from the same IP?

Or do you think it's a programming problem on IMDb itself?

@Breumaster,

  1. @Jessica, thank you for reporting this problem.
  2. Not all of the imdbfan-XXXXXXXXXX accounts are engaged in this vote stuffing. Many are legitimate IMDb user accounts.
  3. These accounts appeared to have all been created around 8 months ago.
  4. It appears that these accounts have been activated around November 24, 2025 to start vote stuffing. At least this is when these accounts started rating films and television series.
  5. If you refresh the IMDb Poll page ( https://www.imdb.com/poll/ ), one of these spam accounts vote about ever 30 seconds.
  6. These accounts rate popular films and television series titles, and use the rounded average rating for the rating.
  7. Sprinklr continued removal of white space is making reporting this problem difficult.
  8. I'm hoping that using a numbered list will keep my comments readable.
  9. I am waiting for the IMDb CS team to comment on this separately and to possibly start an investigation, before commenting further.

There must be a pattern, I guess. I'm curious about what happened. Well, I think it's better to not publish any polls until it is solved. It totally distorts any fairness.
